Ash Wednesday

Ash Wednesday – Service of Ashes

12:00 p.m. – Chapel

Simply described, a Service of Ashes is the bestowing of ashes (from the previous year’s Palm Sunday branches) upon each forehead as a testimony of our mortality. As scripture proclaims,

“By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food

until you return to the ground,

since from it you were taken;

for dust you are and to dust you will return.”

Genesis 3:19

This declaration from God spells ought our plight in this world through fallen humanity. God is simply clarifying life. We are all too frail and vulnerable to think we can do it without his care. Ash Wednesday is that annual reminder that we are never as omnipotent as we like to assume, and so the call for honest assessment of our ever growing need of God and his care over our lives.
