It started with potatoes
It started with potatoes

It’s sad to read how many families are having a hard time just getting through the week. Surveys indicate that upward to 30% – 35% of area residents are not at all sure about food through the week. Many of these have children missing out on something as basic as food. What we tend to take for granted is a major concern for more and more families.

In May, 2011 Sun City Christian Church Men’s group decided “enough already.” We must rise to the occasion and do something about this need. They started with a basic food staple – – potatoes and each month since, in conjunction with needs of the food pantry, a single item is targeted, such as cereal, peanut butter, beans, pasta, soup, rice, tuna, etc.  Then the whole church comes together to focus on that need and do all we can to reach the collection goal.

Personally placing food on the altar is an important part of the process. Ushers are always available, but seldom used because people want to place it before God themselves. It becomes part of purposeful worship. From May 29, 2011 through December 18, 2016 a total of 57,594 pounds of food has been placed on the altar, dedicated in prayer and handed over to Valley View Community Food Bank to be distributed to those in need.
